The Hype Train Station – Week 4 Waivers

By James Fotheringham (@NFLHypeTrain)

Right now it seems as though all of the running back locomotives we used to see are becoming more unreliable and some big names are breaking down a bit. With CMC about to hit the maintenance yard for 3 weeks and Dalvin Cook left back in the shed for week 3, be comforted that most RBs seem to be struggling and waiver wire pickups such as Peyton Barber in Vegas can have top 5 weeks.

As always, injuries and breakdowns are where the waiver wire is needed the most as well as for a few players where the Hype Train is about to set off. This week the injuries of note were: CMC, James White, Rob Gronkowski, Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, Juju Smith-Shuster and AJ Brown.

It may not be many with along with Dalvin Cook that’s 5 of this seasons big hitters with high draft capital. The Giants receiving corps has been decimated and the whole Steelers receiving attack is becoming a no go zone. We are here once again to send you the right way in your fantasy waiver wires and give you a heads up on some potential offers for the future.

1st Class Ticket

The 1st class ticket section covers players who will be the top targets on the wire and the hot ticket.

Chuba Hubbard – RB – Carolina Panthers @DAL – Ownership Percentage: ~10%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 20%

I was tempted to pick someone different as every analyst going will have Hubbard on top of their waiver tree but it’s hard to really see another RB in such a prime spot, even if it’s only for a few weeks. CMC will be missing for a minimum of 3 weeks and maybe longer so while this isn’t a season long play, it’s a high value play for that time. Remember how effective Mike Davis was for Carolina last year? That’s all the persuasion you should need. Also, the other options at RB have big question marks over them.

Tim Patrick – Denver Broncos vs BAL – Ownership Percentage: ~20%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 15%

I said last week that it’s rare for me to write about a player on repeat weeks but with the news that KJ Hamler is out for the season with a torn ACL, Patrick is now a must own as the teams outright WR2 with even more of a target share than before. He didn’t get a TD this week, yet he still got his highest PPR fantasy score of the season after 5 catches for 98 yards. I think his floor is 7 points and his ceiling could be as high as 25 if teams dial in on Sutton and ignore him for long enough.

2nd Class Ticket

This section covers player who may not be the top option but could be good replacements for bye weeks or just have strong matchups. A Flex ticket if you must.

Hunter Renfrow – WR – Las Vegas Raiders @LAC – Ownership Percentage: ~15%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 15%

Once again, a repeat offender but he keeps performing and remains on most waiver wires. Derek Carr and the Raiders are having a cracking start to the season and there’s no reason to believe it’s a fluke either. Renfrow had his best day this week with 77 yards and a TD on 5 catches. He’s had a minimum of 5 catches per game and over 55 yards. He’s got a very handy high floor with room still for a high ceiling, even with Ruggs, Edwards and Waller there. All of those are worth roster spots currently.

Tyler Conklin – TE – Minnesota Vikings vs CLE – Ownership Percentage: ~3%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 1%

This could be an overreaction to a 7 for 70yds and a TD game but it appears Conklin is the TE1 in Minnesota and has his role figured out. He’s had a minimum of 4 targets in each game and when the defence is weak he’s finding space and getting yards. He’s currently the TE9 on the season and even some of those above him are more “big game wonders” than he will be, come the end of season standings.

Other players of note:

RB: Rhamondre Stevenson (NE ~10%), Peyton Barber (LV ~10%), Kenneth Gainwell (PHI ~35%), Giovani Bernard (TB ~15%).

WR: Jameison Crowder (NYJ ~20%), Jalen Reagor (PHI ~25%), Emmanuel Sanders (BUF ~25%).

TE: Evan Engram (NYG ~35%), Dawson Knox (BUF ~7%), Pat Friermuth (PIT ~6%).

Day Return Ticket

This section will highlight the QBs and DST options who you may be able to pickup as a streaming option this week. We often advise people not to draft an early QB and certainly not an early DST so this section backs up that advice.

Taylor Heinicke – QB – Washington Football Team – @ATL – Ownership Percentage: ~5%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

If Kirk Cousins is still available in your league then grab him but as he’s over my 40% threshold I had a few ways I could have gone here. Sam Darnold is a great pickup if you want to keep a guy for the whole season as I feel he’s proved his consistent value. If you want just a guy for this week though I’m going for Taylor Heinicke. Against a strong Buffalo defence he still put up 23 fantasy points and he is the TE17 through 3 games, ahead of Mayfield, Tannehill and Burrow. He has options and with the Falcons, he also has a favourable matchup.

Other low rostered options at QB to consider are: Sam Darnold (CAR ~15%), Teddy Bridgewater (DEN ~35%), Jared Goff (DET ~16%).

Cincinnati Bengals – DST – vs JAX – Ownership Percentage: ~7%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

The Bengals defence have scored over 10 fantasy points in each of their opening 3 games and are ranked 9th so far this season. They have had some favourable matchups but they have one of the most favourable matchups possible in Jacksonville this week. The Titans have an easier matchup with the Jets but they’ve been very underwhelming as a defence so far so the Bengals would be my sub 40% preference.

Other low rostered options at DST to consider are: Titans (@NYJ ~15%), Bears (vsDET ~20%).

Advanced Ticket

Advanced fares are for players who you won’t be playing in your line-ups straight away, but keep an eye on developments, and if you’re in deeper leagues, get a bargain by jumping in before everyone else.

Collin Johnson – WR – New York Giants – Ownership Percentage: ~0%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

With Slayton and Shepard potentially missing time Collin Johnson stepped up to have a 5 catch, 51 yard game against Atlanta. I was hoping it would become a Board game as CJ Board saw 2 targets and while he caught a 38 yarder, Johnson looked to inherit the WR2 role with Kadarious Toney underwhelming as the WR3. If Toney really isn’t ready and both Shepard and Slayton miss time, Johnson has a route to fantasy relevance, Golladay will become a target hog, Engram becomes relevant and I might get one roll of the dice at legitimately fitting a Board Game pun into a tweet.

Dan Arnold – TE – Jacksonville Jaguars – Ownership Percentage: ~3%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

This might be my most outlandish shout to date at the Hype Train Station but bear with me here. James O’Shaugnessy was looking like an excellent option a few weeks ago but with him on IR the Jags haven’t replicated his usage with Chris Manhertz or Jacob Hollister. The trade for Arnold cost them a former first rounder in CJ Henderson (and swapping their 5th for the Panthers 3rd in 2022) but the Jags wanted him in free agency before he signed with Carolina. They must have earmarked him as a fit to their scheme and as he’s not the most proficient at blocking, he might be a good replacement for O’Shaugnessy. With a rookie QB who wants that TE blanket there’s the potential for a tonne of targets when he gets up to speed and even TD upside too. It’s a long shot and it still relies on Trevor Lawrence being given time to find him, but in deeper leagues this may be a solid stash.
