The Hype Train Station – Week 2 Waivers

By James Fotheringham (@NFLHypeTrain)

Well that was a fun opening week of action wasn’t it? Plenty of action, high scores but unfortunately also injuries. There had been a fair few big name losses in pre-season but week 1 claimed Jerry Jeudy, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Raheem Mostert with the status of OBJ still not fully known either.

We’re here to try and help signal you the onto the right route to avoid those now closed off routes but also to tell you the best and most direct route for success, while also trying to make sure you don’t blow your FAAB budget (or waiver priority).

1st Class Ticket

The 1st class ticket section covers players who will be the top targets on the wire and the hot ticket.

Elijah Mitchell – RB – San Francisco 49ers @PHI – Ownership Percentage: ~2%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 20%

With Tre Sermon left out of the team and Raheem Mostert not making it through the first half it was up to the rookie Mitchell and JaMychel Hasty and they took their opportunity. Mitchell had 19 rushing attempts for 104 yards and a TD. Hasty took some of the passing down work but also got a rushing TD so he gets a mention later but with Mostert out for 8 weeks and Sermon out of favour, Mitchell may well be the lead back.

Sterling Shepard – New York Giants @WAS – Ownership Percentage: ~25%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 10%

The Giants passing game has been vastly ignored for fantasy this offseason. Kenny Golladay joined the team and not many people were optimistic about his prospects, but the ball has to go somewhere, right. It turns out Sterling Shepard, who was at best a final round flyer in most leagues, has become the safety blanket for Daniel Jones. He had 7 receptions on 9 targets for 113 yards and a TD. He could well be a reliable player if you want a safe floor and a medium height ceiling.

2nd Class Ticket

This section covers player who may not be the top option but could be good replacements for bye weeks or just have strong matchups. A Flex ticket if you must.

Kenneth Gainwell – RB – Philadelphia Eagles vsSF – Ownership Percentage: ~4%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 2%

Gainwell was not on a lot of peoples radar in redraft, although in dynasty I imagine he’s on a bunch of taxi squads. He got 9 carries for 37 yards and a TD on the ground and caught 2 of 3 in the air for 6 yards. He will feature more in the passing game over time but he’s getting work, is a great complement to Sanders and will only develop further.

Christian Kirk – WR – Arizona Cardinals vsMIN – Ownership Percentage: ~4%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 8%

I have to admit, this one was a signalling error on my part in the pre-season. With Hopkins, Moore and AJ Green it felt like too many mouths to feed and that Kirk would be pretty ghostly. He now looks to be the clear WR2, with a much better connection with Murray and some confidence in his stride. A 5/5, 70 yard, 2TD game against a more fancied Titans team reminded everyone of his existence and in most leagues, tickets are still available.

Other players of note:

RB: Mark Ingram (@CLE ~11%), JaMycal Hasty (@PHI ~15%).

WR: Deonte Harris (@CAR ~1%), Zach Pascal (vsLAR ~2%), Nelson Agholor (@NYJ ~30%).

TE: Albert Okwuegbunam (@JAX ~2%), Juwan Johnson (@CAR ~1%), Pharoah Brown (@CLE ~0%).

Day Return Ticket

This section will highlight the QBs and DST options who you may be able to pickup as a streaming option this week. We often advise people not to draft an early QB and certainly not an early DST so this section backs up that advice.

Jameis Winston – QB – New Orleans Saints – vsNYG – Ownership Percentage: ~26%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

Winston didn’t have much value in drafts pre-season purely because the Saints took their time before announcing him as the starter over Taysom Hill. The uncertainty due to the injuries to the receiving corps and the hurricane meant he wasn’t being picked up much either. But when you throw 5TDs, no INTs and getting a 130+ QB rating, people will take notice. He had 4 rushes for 37 yards to add that element but the shocking stat here is that he got 40+ PPR points despite only throwing for 148 yards… There may be more to come as he gets more weapons back, scary.

Other low rostered options at QB to consider are Teddy Bridgewater (@JAX)[~5%], Jared Goff (@GB)[~5%], Tyrod Taylor (@CLE)[~4%].

Arizona Cardinals – DST – vsMIN – Ownership Percentage: ~20%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

The Cardinals defence shocked everybody with how they dealt with Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, Julio Jones and AJ Brown. The Titans got humbled and Chandler Jones with 5 sacks in a game had a day few pros will ever have. Isaiah Simmons had 9 tackles and an INT too which made you forget JJ Watt had joined the team. There’s not a lot of great streaming options this week when it comes to matchups so go for the defence that has form and confidence and is against a team that was okay but not spectacular.

Other low rostered options at DST to consider are: Saints (@CAR)[~26%], Lions (@GB)[~1%].

Advanced Ticket

Advanced fares are for players who you won’t be playing in your line-ups straight away, but keep an eye on developments, and if you’re in deeper leagues, get a bargain by jumping in before everyone else.

Dyami Brown – WR – Washington Football Team – Ownership Percentage: ~3%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 1%

Brown barely featured in the season opener with 1 reception from 4 targets but with Curtis Samuel being put on IR so close to the season and then losing Ryan Fitzpatrick early in the game to a hip injury the offence was always going to be on the back foot in week 1. Taylor Heinicke came in and did what he needed to do and will start from now on. Brown was tied for the most targets among WRs for Washington and will improve as he gains experience. A perfect stash who you can get cheap before he breaks out.

James O’Shaughnessy – TE – Jacksonville Jaguars – Ownership Percentage: ~0%

Recommended FAAB Budget: 0%

Very deep one this but Trevor Lawrence sent 8 targets to O’Shaughnessy and he caught 6 for 48 yards. Annoyingly Chris Manhertz got the TD with his only target but that will keep J-O-S under the radar. Lawrence clearly trusts him and with the Jags going pass heavy, he’s going to be great for PPR and if he hits the endzone a few times, you could find him being a handy streamer if not a starter. Grab him now before he has this kind of game with a TD to break out and leave you standing at the platform having missed the train.
