The Draft is in the books and the dust has settled. But how well did your team do in the first round?

We are taking a look back at every selection in the first round and giving you the lowdown on the pick; Was it a reach? Was it a steal? We’ll tell you and give you the impact for fantasy football….

Pick: 12th Overall

Player: Rashan Gary

Drafted by: Green Bay Packers

Grade: B-

Analysis:

For me, this is a pretty big reach by the Packers. I have been pretty vocal about the fact I firstly, don’t think Rashan Gary should be an edge defender in the NFL and I don’t believe Rashan Gary is a first round player.

I think my line on one of our pre draft podcasts was, give me Rashan Gary in the 2nd round and put him at 3-tech and we’ll talk.

I’m standing by that. I just feel that there’s no even more pressure on Gary to perform since he’s now a top 15 pick.

The thing is, aside from “upside” and projections… what are we going off of with Gary? Yes, Rashan Gary has a load of potential but he did not produce in college, he was injured in college and the man cannot bend and last time I checked, having flexibility is pretty important when defending the edge.

The thing what makes this a B- instead of some kind of C is that, as contradictory as this sounds, when you draft guys, even in the first round, there’s always an element of drafting potential.

Also, the fact that Green Bay plays a 3-4 base defense, Gary is going to be playing a more narrow technique than he would as a defensive end in a 4-3. As long as Green Bay are going to play Gary as an end and not a stand-up linebacker… Which may sound insane, because is absolutely is but there are rumours that Green Bay may be toying with the idea of having Gary stand up.

Fantasy Football Impact:

Not a lot at all. In past articles, when talking about defensive players, I’ve mentioned the fact that said player may cause a bunch of turnovers or if your an IDP guy and that player could make a load of tackles. I doubt Gary will do either.
