Fantasy Football: Week 9 – Key Injuries and Their Gameday Status

**Updated 08/11 – 15:44 GMT/10:44 EST**

The one thing all of us fantasy players dread the most, injuries. Unfortunately, this is part and parcel with NFL life and it’s inevitable that at some point during the season one or more of your players will have the dreaded “questionable” or “doubtful” tags. The tricky bit is wading through the reports to find out the true status of your fantasy stud. Fantasy players are very often used as decoys when injured to fool defences, so it’s important that we’re sure that a player is 100% healthy before deploying into a line-up.

This article will take a look at the top injury concerns that we’re hearing about this week and provide a recommendation as to whether they should be starting for you or if you need to pick up their handcuff from the waiver wire.

Don’t forget to keep your #EyesPeeled for our Twitter feed (@F10YFantasy) this Sunday as we’ll be providing you with updated on the below mentioned injuries.

Top Injury Concern

Keenan Allen – Wide Receiver – Los Angeles Chargers

Injury: Illness

Status: Questionable

UPDATE: Keenan Allen’s second test came back negative – making him eligible to play

Sore throat and absence from practice through illness? Sounds like Keenan Allen has suspected COVID-19. Although the Chargers say he has tested negative, you can never be too careful in this day and age and Allen will have to jump through hoops to be allowed to suit up against the Raiders.

WR14 on the year, it’s been another stellar season for Allen as he builds his chemistry week on week with Herbert. Fourth in targets in the league, Keenan Allen has a legitimate shot at pushing for a fantasy top-10 finish for the second straight year.

In Allen’s absence, Mike Williams would step up to the plate as the WR1 in Los Angeles. However, with the playing styles so different, we could see an uptake in targets for the likes of Hunter Henry.

Allen’s status is certainly one to keep an eye on. However, if he clears COVID protocols, he starts in your lineups.

Other Injury Concerns

Calvin Ridley – WR – Atlanta Falcons

Injury: Foot

Gameday Status: Game Time Decision/Doubtful

Ridley was touted to miss time ever since he injured his foot during the week 8 Thursday Night Football matchup against the Carolina Panthers. However, a 10-day rest had left some hopeful that he may be able to suit up against the Broncos. But, with week 9 just hours away and the Falcons on bye in week 10, it could well be that Ridley sits to ensure his healthiness from week 11 and beyond.

He’ll be tested pre-game, so is technically a game-time decision. However, this is more to see if he can play rather than to see if he can’t. It doesn’t look good for Ridley owners and you may wish to sit him even if he passes his pre-game workout.

Christian Blake will be the receiver that steps in 3 receiver sets for the Falcons. However, with two more than capable wideouts (Julio Jones and Russell Gage) ahead of him in the pecking order, I don’t see any fantasy relevance for the undrafted free agent of 2018.

Ezekiel Elliott – RB – Dallas Cowboys

Injury: Hamstring

Status: Doubtful

The Cowboys had playoff, even Super Bowl aspirations heading into the season. But, in week 9, they find themselves at 2-6, without Dak and headed into a matchup against an unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers team. To compound this further, it’s now likely that they’ll be without their star rusher – Ezekiel Elliott.

Elliott suffered a hamstring injury against the Eagles last week and has been limited in practice ever since. With the season all but over, it could well be in Dallas’ best interests to sit Zeke in this one – especially considering that the Steelers are the best run defense in the league.

Tony Pollard will take the majority of Zeke’s work in his absence and starts for your fantasy team if you have him. However, as mentioned above, the Steelers do not give many fantasy points up to the position and a negative game script could render Pollard of little to no use.
