Fantasy Football: Week 13 – Key Injuries and Their Gameday Status

**Updated 06/12 – 13:22 GMT/08:22 EST**

The one thing all of us fantasy players dread the most, injuries. Unfortunately, this is part and parcel with NFL life and it’s inevitable that at some point during the season one or more of your players will have the dreaded “questionable” or “doubtful” tags. The tricky bit is wading through the reports to find out the true status of your fantasy stud. Fantasy players are very often used as decoys when injured to fool defences, so it’s important that we’re sure that a player is 100% healthy before deploying into a line-up.

This article will take a look at the top injury concerns that we’re hearing about this week and provide a recommendation as to whether they should be starting for you or if you need to pick up their handcuff from the waiver wire.

Don’t forget to keep your #EyesPeeled for our Twitter feed (@F10YFantasy) this Sunday as we’ll be providing you with updated on the below mentioned injuries.

Top Injury Concern

Clyde Edwards-Helaire – RB – Kansas City Chiefs

Injury: Illness

Status: Questionable

UPDATE: Should be ready to play

The curious case of Clyde Edwards-Helaire. CEH surprised everybody when he flagged up on the injury report on Friday with an “illness”. Thankfully, this isn’t COVID related and is thought to be a stomach bug. Not playing until Sunday night will help CEH’s chance of playing as Andy Reid doesn’t seem too concerned about Edwards-Helaire’s chances of suiting up against the Broncos.

Clyde’s usage has unsurprisingly decreased since Le’Veon Bell arrived in week 7. Averaging a healthy 21 touches per game in the first 6 weeks of the season, Edwards-Helaire was the RB11 (PPR) in this time period. Since week 7, CEH has averaged just 10.5 touches per game and his performance has fallen to that of an RB2, with him scoring the 19th most fantasy points at the position since week 7.

It’s a difficult matchup for the Chiefs RBs against Denver this week and CEH only managed 13.3 fantasy points against them in week 7 – despite scoring a touchdown. I’m reluctant to start him this week, even if he does suit up.

Other Injury Concerns

Cam Newton – QB – New England Patriots

Injury: Abdomen

Status: Questionable

UPDATE: Expected to play

It’s been a difficult first season for Newton in New England but he’s had some rather large shoes to fill. It was a better day in the office for Cam last week as they ran out victorious against the playoff chasing Cardinals. It’ll be another difficult matchup against the Chargers this weekend, albeit definitely winnable for the Pats.

Newton has been limited throughout the entire week with an abdomen injury. Newton has tried to downplay the injury but still remains questionable for the AFC tilt. He’s already missed a game this season after testing positive for COVID-19 and, if he misses again this week, it’d be difficult to say whether Stidham or Hoyer would get the nod.

Although Super Cam has had two 350+ yard passing games this year, he’s yet to throw for multiple TDs in a game and has only thrown a touchdown in 4 out of his 10 games. If you’re starting him, it’s for his rushing upside. Cam is 3rd in the league in rushing attempts at the quarterback position, 4th in the league with rushing yards and 2nd in the league with rushing touchdowns. Incidentally, he’s joint 5th in the league at any position with his 9 rushing TDs.

I would imagine that Cam starts in this one and, particularly in Superflex leagues, he starts for your team.

Terry McLaurin – WR – Washington Football Team

Injury: Ankle

Status: Questionable

Another player with the benefit of playing late in the week, Scary Terry only cropped on the injury report on Friday and is listed as questionable against the Steelers with an ankle injury. Due to the Steelers playing Wednesday in week 13, this game has been pushed out to Monday night to form a double header with the Niners and the Bills.

Quietly, Washington have got quite a few pieces in this team with McLaurin, Gibson, McKissic, Thomas and a very underrated defense. Alex Smith, third on the depth chart at the beginning of the season, will start against the Steelers and will likely need to throw the football – a lot. If he goes, McLaurin will undoubtedly be the go to guy and should have another nice day. The PPR WR9 on the season, McLaurin shouldn’t be a start/sit decision if healthy.
