Pick It Apart; Jerry Tillery

The Draft is in the books and the dust has settled. But how well did your team do in the first round?

We are taking a look back at every selection in the first round and giving you the lowdown on the pick; Was it a reach? Was it a steal? We’ll tell you and give you the impact for fantasy football….

Pick: 28th Overall

Player: Jerry Tillery

Draft by: Los Angeles Chargers

Grade: A-

Analysis:
So this is the one we’ve all been waiting for… Well, just me. Yeah, I’m excited about this one.

First of all, I’m not going to lie to you, the good readers of this fair site, I didn’t want Jerry Tillery when the Chargers went on the clock on draft night… But does that mean I wasn’t happy when it was announced? No, it does not.

I am very happy that the Chargers have added another piece to their defense and added strength on strength. Nowadays, you won’t hear a word of protest from me if you tried to convince me that the Chargers defense is now the stronger side of the ball for this team… Think of how much talent they have on offense and think about that statement.

This is a squad that’s being talked about one of, if not thee most balanced rosters in the NFL and with good reason.

So, on to the man himself, why do I like this pick so much?

First of all, the fit in Gus Bradley’s defense should be a really nice one. Tillery can line up as a 3-tech or as a 5-tech, depending on what the down and distance is and what front the Chargers are deploying. Tillery will be battling with last year’s third round pick, Justin Jones for the starting job in training camp and either way, both guys will be on the field for a lot of snaps as Bradley rotates through this linemen..

Tillery should be an upgrade in the run game as he very rarely misses tackles on ball carriers that come his way but more importantly, he should give the Chargers a big boost when it comes to generating interior pressure on opposing QB’s. Which is probably a huge reason why Los Angeles had him earmarked for their pick at 28.

Tillery should create pressure on his own given his excellent, twitched up athletic abilities and super quick get off and then exponentially, should also make life easier for Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram on the outside because it’s going to be awfully tough to block all three.

I foresee a N A S T Y sub package with Uchenna Nwosu as the Leo (designated pass rusher), Tillery at the 1-tech and then Bosa as the 3-tech with Melvin Ingram as the defensive end… Your quarterback is going to have to get rid of the ball real quick against that one, which should be fun because the coverage should be pretty good and you could add in Derwin James or even Des King as extra blitzers. Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

Fantasy Football Impact:

Defensive tackles aren’t the most exciting of IDP players so very little direct impact but as I have said above, the potential impact that Tillery could have on the Chargers defense overall could vault them in amongst the best defenses in the league and therefore one of the first defenses that you may be willing to draft when the big night roles around.
